If you don’t already know whether you’re allergic to strawberries, look out for symptoms the next time. They are pretty obvious and a little hard to miss.
Symptoms of the allergy:
When strawberry starts acting like an allergen, it produces histamine and immunoglobulin E, which is an antibody. This production of an antibody can give rise to abnormal health conditions.
There are four major kinds of strawberry allergies: oral allergy, skin allergy, gastrointestinal allergy and respiratory allergy.
- Skin allergy or strawberry allergy rash:
This starts of as skin irritation, where a person gets red hive-like rashes all over there body, and this swelling is accompanied by an itching. It usually starts within two hours of consumption or contact. The hives might appear and disappear or might take the form of general rashes.
Other symptoms would include swelling of the face, hands and fingers. The person may even start experiencing an itching inside their eyes and a blocked nose.
- Oral allergy:
These symptoms show up after consumption where the person might suffer from a swelling and itching of the throat. It generally starts off as a tingling in the mouth and then might lead to an overall swelling of the lips, tongue, and inner cheeks. This particular symptom is quite dangerous and demands immediate medical attention.
- Gastrointestinal Symptoms:
This is when the digestive system gets affected. The allergic person might suffer from vomiting, nausea and an upset stomach. In severe cases, it can lead to diarrhea and chronic abdominal cramps.
- Respiratory allergies:
This is the worst kind of allergy and it must be treated without delay, otherwise it can give rise to fatal consequences. Symptoms start off as a difficulty in breathing, and the patient might start feeling suffocated. It can also be accompanied by a fall in blood pressure, increased pulse, nausea, dizziness or a loss of consciousness.
Treatments for strawberry allergy:
Strawberry allergy rash can be treated by applying corticosteroid or hydrocortisone lotions which are available across the counter in the medical stores. They help to cool down the inflammation and treat the rashes. For oral allergies, Benadryl, Atarax or Zyrtec might act as the solution. However, in severe cases, it is better to not take a chance and to contact a physician immediately.
The other two kinds of allergies are indeed very serious, and one must take medication only after a proper consultation with a practitioner.
The best kind of prevention is however to avoid strawberries altogether!
